"Sleep is a waste of time. I sleep hard, but for short intervals. So as I wake, I do what I call midnight sketches. They are pen and ink sketches. I do them quick and fast. You see, sketches are the very soul of an artist. They are fresh - they are more meaningful and often more beautiful than the painting.  When you do a sketch into a painting the intellect goes to work - you plan and organize. Something is sometimes lost in between a sketch and a painting. Don't get me wrong, the painting can still be good, but the essence is muted. I have done thousands of midnight sketches. I do them on penny post cards or envelopes with stamps on them, on books or whatever I have around me."
