The
annual celebration of La Fiesta de Guadalupe will take place on Sunday, December 12,
2004, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun.There will be traditional
Yaqui Dances, performances by Mariachi Milagro Juvenil and Ballet Forklorico Tapatio,
as well as a classical guitar recital by Domingo DeGrazia, the artist's son.
Delicious Native American food will
be available, as well as local artists' works and traditional Native American folk
art demonstrations. PiƱata's will be provided for the children
at intervals throughout the day.
The activities will conclude with
an abbreviated version of the traditional Las Posadas procession, performed by Carrillo
Elementary School students on the Gallery Grounds. The procession is shown in
the picture to the right.
Last year's revival of this festival
was extremely well received. It was attended by a wonderfully diverse blend of
people - old friends of the Gallery and newcomers to Tucson, young and old, with a
multitude of ethnic backgrounds - all to celebrate a religious holiday that was dear
to the artist's heart.
The Mission in the Sun, a landmark
at the Gallery in the Sun, was built by DeGrazia and dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe.
It is a fitting venue for a Guadalupe Day celebration.
Admission is free. Event parking is available
at 6262 N. Swan Road, just northwest of the Gallery on Skyline. NO parking is
allowed on Swan Road. Cameras, and audio video recorders will be allowed on the grounds
during this event, but their use will be prohibited during the Yaqui ceremonies in
deference to the religious beliefs and traditions of our Yaqui guests.
